The emissions calculation from transportation
The current Idemitsu project involves the collection and transportation of food waste from a school environment to a processing facility for.
In the absence of this intervention, the original treatment of the plant would be to dispose of the food waste using a garbage truck to a neighboring landfill- so through this program, there is an avoided emission savings from decreasing use of the food truck.
The truck used in question is a 10 year old vehicle that can carry 5000 Kg of capacity. The distance from the school to landfill was 21 KM.
The reference data used for the truck came from internet research around the average fuel consumption, total distance traveled and the emission factor of the consumption diesel fuel.
Pro-rated calculation of transportation emission
One key assumption of attribute of the avoided emissions is to use a “pro-rated” approach, where the avoided emissions of the food waste not being transported was calculated on a per-ton basis from percentage total emission of the truck. For example, the emission of the Kg of CO2 of entire truck is
Average fuel consumption per KM is 10 Ltr/KM, the distance traveled is 21KM,
21 KM / trip * 10 Ltr / KM = 210 Ltr of fuel consumed / trip
210 Ltr / trip * 2.68 KgCo2e/ Ltr (emission factor of diesel) = -562.8 Kg of CO2/ trip emitted
If the food waste was 1 Kg, then the pro-rated emissions would be 1/5000 * 562.8 Kg of CO2 = 0.11256 Kg of CO2 avoided
Multiplication factor for emissions
A second key assumption was that the truck was not always at full carrying capacity. First hand accounts from the intervention participants observed that the truck was on average about 70% full, so the total emission score was multiplied with a (10/7 = 1.333) ratio to account for the partial load on the truck.
Ultimately, the truck avoided making 23 total trips, avoiding the transport of 121.65 total KG of food waste, with collective impact of avoided emissions of -13.69 KG CO2e avoided assuming total full capacity of the truck, and -19.56132 CO2e avoided assuming 70% truck utilization ratio.
The emissions calculation for energy usage and consumption
The use of the food waste processing machine requires electricity - which is a positive emission source. This second step of the calculation estimates the total emissions produced by use of the machine.
Between the phase of the pilot - 28-Feb-2024 - 11-Apr-2024, the use of the machine consumed 278.73 KWh of electricity.
Local Emission Factor for Bangkok Grid Electricity
0.44 Kg Co2e/ KWh
So the total positive emissions from energy consumption of use of the food processing machine is:
0.44 Kg CO2e/ KWh * 278.73 KWh = 122.64 Kg CO2e
The emissions calculation from avoided landfill waste
An extra impact of the diverted food waste from landfill is the avoided emissions from anaerobic fermentation of landfill waste. By avoiding sending the food to landfill, we avoid emissions from the organic decomposition of the food waste which can generate CO2, methane and other sources of greenhouse gases.
A key assumption involved the calculation of dry organic mass of the food waste, as the water content will not create emissions. A dry to water weight ratio of 23% was used to estimate the dry weight of the food waste.
Ratio of Dry Weight
0.23
Emission Factor for Organic Food Waste in Landfill
-6.528 Kg CO2e/ Kg of dry weight
Of the total food waste involved in the project, the final dry weight was estimated to be 28.0 KG, and the avoided emissions of preventing this from decomposing in the landfill was -182.65 Kg CO2e
Conclusion
The final carbon impact of the pilot was that there were
-19.56 Kg CO2e saved from avoided transportation of the food waste,
positive 122.64 Kg CO2e of emissions from use of the machine,
and -182.65 Kg CO2e of emissions saved from avoiding the landfill,
Ultimately resulting in a net avoidance of -79.57 Kg CO2e of emissions of climate impact from the project.
